45 Examples of Documents for Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa

Can you provide examples of documents for Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa? Sure, I can. However, you must accept that this list has obligatory and optional documents. In other words, it includes docs not relevant for you but for someone else. And also – I suggest two completely separate ideas for techies and applicants for the business route. Also, I considered Fast Track as a special case for Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa applicants. Finally, a great bonus for people who are doing science in Digital Technologies – for you I brainstormed a list of relevant documents knowing your specific business and routine.

Personal Statement for Tech Route

Lots of information about this document is written on my website so if you need to start with the highlights of this exceptionally important document, read here.

Letter of Recommendation No. 1

Recently I created a full guide for these letters so I think there is no need to copy-paste it here. However, in order to follow the structure of my article, I will share a couple of extra-advice below each of the Letters of Recommendation. Advice no.1 for tech applicants – you can get a letter of recommendation from C-level manager of tech (Chief Technology Officer, Chief Data Scientist or similar) but you are not obliged to be tied to tech experts. Since the final value of any tech is always in represented in money, you are free to bring not only a clue of your high-level expertise but also the proof of the monetary value of your expert knowledge.

Letter of Recommendation No. 2

I got a question about a signee of Letter of Recommendation who is not doing digital business but is a niche expert of real business for many years. My answer is “yes”: a person with 10+ years in specific business may give you a letter of recommendation if you are working on the digitalizing experience of this industry.

Letter of Recommendation No. 3

Don’t forget that each letter has to be not longer than two A4 pages (in other words, one both-sided plain white A4). I know that we cannot limit our signees but it is nice-to-remind before you will be disappointed with the recommendation on many pages.

Your CV/resume

It is quite an easy task to create a CV as one of the documents for Talent Visa, but there are a couple of tricky moments, as usual :). The most important one – your resume should not be longer than 2 pages. Apology for this mantra about “two-pages-everywhere” but it is better to remind one more time than think about mistakes afterwords.

Extract of Employment Contract from Current / Past Job

This blog post is covering the topic nicely. However, to summarize the requirements for an employment contract as a supporting document, it must have:

  • date and place of your work commitments;
  • the full title of position and salary;
  • brief about responsibilities (if it is possible);
  • signatures of all the parties – scanned and copy-pasted into the document as it is.

Certificate of Company Registration (with an applicants name on it)

If you are a founder and director of the company you are allowed to provide documents about this fact to support your key criteria. Don’t forget to translate your certificate as well as any other type of proof if your documents for Talent Visa is not in English.

Your Letter of Support from Past Colleague

If you have a person who is your colleague in the past and can support your Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa application with the statement of your excellence – ask about this. Ideally, the format of this document has to be like a Letter of Recommendation.

Letter of Support from Past / Current Customer

Actually, your customers are one of the best people who can provide you with one of three Letters of Recommendation. This document will be good in terms of the task to prove the quality of the product that you work on. As you know, from October 2019 mainly people with a professional background in product-led companies can apply for Tech Nation Visa.

Letter of Support from Local School / College

One of the ideas on how to make your profile stronger is to volunteer for a local educational hub. You have unique expertise in technologies – go there and offer them a bit of advice and unpaid consultancy for any basic or complicated questions in Digital Technologies.

Certificate about the win at a hackathon

I applied a couple of such certificates and can promise that if you apply one – this document will work. Just don’t forget to translate it as I was doing this too. Also, if you get a space in you documents for Talent Visa – you can add a bit of description of the hackathon: it’s purpose, scale, date and place, number of participants and winners, etc.

Information about your Git contributions

One of the frequently asked questions from the techies. Yes, you can attach a screenshot about your impressive commits via any git-system (GitHub, BitBacket, GitLab to name a few). However, you must consider this option twice if you have worked with git rarely. If you are not an active user of git, it is better to avoid this step and attach something more impressive.

Screenshot from the Google Play Store / Apple Store about the number of app downloads

If you have thousands or millions of downloads – go ahead and demonstrate your success to Endorsement panel. I don’t think you have to do this with an amount less than 1000 downloads. However, for too niche areas of digital technologies, it might work.

Certificate about NANO Degree from Udacity

A winning clue and one of the best proof to attach as supporting documents for Talent Visa. If you got this Nano Degree a couple of years ago and have not used this knowledge in your direct occupation – write a cover letter to include into your bundle about this experience and why you are not on track with it.

Comments on the professional topic, extracted from the national news (with translation)

If you have given any type of comment, op-ed or other appearance in the news of national or international level – use your chance to show off this fact. In the screenshot, you must clearly show that you were involved an expert in your professional area and, actually, what have you said on the topic. Title of the article, date and issue as well as a name of the media, has to be also included in this document

Again, let’s have brief explanations for each of the documents for Talent Visa in the mentioned bundle for a business route:

Personal Statement for Business Route

Don’t forget that your Personal Statement must include not only facts about your past and current status. It must have the approximate way that you want to lead, living in the United Kingdom. I wrote about this aspect here.

Letter of Recommendation No. 1

In an ideal case, your Letter of Recommendation must be signed by any type of non-tech C-level manager with a focus on your expert field. In other words, it may work (but may not) if you will bring this letter given to you by Chief Ruby Architect of the international tech company and you are a marketer… It seems like the level of a referee is completely good. And fit the requirements of the Home Office, by the way. But something is wrong. Do you understand what I mean?

Letter of Recommendation No. 2

A huge bonus for any Letter of Recommendation (but for business route particularly) is a clear representation of facts about your exceptional talents. I hope you know a very popular SMART approach for setting goals. In letters of recommendation, we have the same – dates, numbers, measurable results are the most wanted parts.

Letter of Recommendation No. 3

Recently I got a question about the official photo materials to attach for Letter of Recommendation. Like proof of the relationship between the referee and a person who will apply for Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa. They could meet at the international conference, for example. This point is not completely clear since it looks a little bit extraordinary :). I have never heard about a fact of attaching any photos to documents for Talent Visa. But considering this option, I think it is not prohibited. Then if you have been speakers at UN global conference or highlighted by World Forum photo on its events. Surely, it will be a great bonus!

Your CV/resume

Here I have written a little bit about the approach what education is better to pay attention to your documents for Talent Visa. And regarding past and current jobs, I want to add one more thing: you must write only relevant positions and experiences. Think that you have not more than pages of your CV. Hence, hand-pick only the facts, that are the most important and influential for you. If you worked as a shop assistant and you do not want to show this experience due to the irrelevance of this fact to your Scala-developer profile – you are free not to do this

Salary Slips from Current / Past Job

Traditionally, this document is strictly confidential, with a format and content approved by the governmental body or other official authority. However, in a case, if your salary slip is a customised document from your company, it must include:

  • name of the company, your name, position, month of payment and year;
  • information about your National Insurance number;
  • lots of numbers about earnings and deductions – your net salary, basic salary and bonus as well as your paid contributions for taxes, National Insurance, Pensione Scheme, etc.
  • sometimes, it may be signed by a person entitled to deliver the payslips.

How many payslips to provide? For sure, depends on many individual factors but not less than two. If you have a question on payslips as evidence for key criteria to attach to your documents for Talent Visa, let me know.

Letter of Support from Head of Department at Current Job

Your line manager can be a person of C-suite management but may not… As a result, you can ask your manager to make a personal contribution to your Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa application by providing you with a letter of support. Basically, it has to be written in accordance with the Letter of Recommendation. It may include graphics and other visual information about your performance, the financial value of your work and influence on your current/past company’s growth. By the way, this letter also requires headed paper. However, if your referee cannot make it, (s)he is allowed to write on a plain A4 white paper but has to explain the details of his/her work commitment.

Letter of Support from Past Manager

It almost like the previous paragraph. But in this case, you can consider to include one more thing into the letter of support. Your past manager may write why you have left the company and if it is because you are so talented and were invited to a bigger and better company. Consequently, it will add extra value to the whole document.

Letter of Support from Past Customer

In brief, customers are ideal people for providing feedback about your personality and talents. Sure, if they are happy customers :). The requirements for the letters are the same as to Letter of Recommendation. In other words, each letter must clearly include information about your involvement in the work on the product, which made them delighted.

Letter of Support from Past Colleague

I do not want to repeat every time this mantra about Letters of Support as a part of documents for Talent Visa. In both tech and business route, they must be from anyone but must include pretty much the same information as Letter of Recommendation. In the case of a past colleague – this person must have (a) a promising role, (b) at the well-known organisation (within your industry or worldwide).

Letter of Support from Local Charity Foundation

This document may be a good fit for a person who applies under business route since most of the charity work is related to social, financial and administrative pillars. Sure, there are a few exceptions. Hence, if you think how to make your application better – attach the letter of support from an organisation of community where you volunteer and use your core professional skills.

Letter to confirm an Award of Professional Excellence

One of the best-ever part of documents for Talent Visa! If you have got a professional award, you must contact the organisers of the competition. Or the head of the judging committee. Send a simple request to get an official document about your win. Then attach it as a supporting doc.

Personally, I have done it in my own Tier 1 Exceptional Promise visa application.

Proof of past / ongoing mentorship in Digital Project

A couple of years ago I was a mentor at one of the digital projects. I applied my professional knowledge in a niche area there. Hence, I got a confirmation about that experience too!

Certificate about the successful accomplishment of advanced professional courses

Coursera is good. But if you have finished any specific training or course of advanced level for professionals in your area – it will work perfectly! In fact, the narrower area means that it is not about general something in Digital Technologies but about a real pain on a real case study. It worths a lot!

Screenshot of the article in a business media

Articles or comments to them are also very good proof to attach to documents for Talent Visa. It will be amazing to have famous and powerful media in your list but even if you were featured by local or professional media – no worries at all. Make sure that your capture has a link (or make QR code for it!), date, a name of the media, a title of an article, your name, position and your statement (or a part of it).

Personal Statement for Fast Track

Check your Personal Statement using the knowledge shared here. And if you need someone to read your draft and tell the honest opinion – I have amazing news: I can be that person :). I have already read dozens (and wrote winning one for myself) so, please, let me know if you need my support.

Letter of Recommendation No. 1

Advice exclusively for Fast Track applicants: since you are at the digital accelerator now or will be there – use this resource of support as much as you can. If you do not have appropriate contacts to ask them about a Letter of Recommendation, perhaps, an accelerator can help you to find the right people?

Letter of Recommendation No. 2

Remember that a winning Letter of Recommendation must include information about your past and your future. In other words, a referee must write about your current status of the leader in your industry and also pay extensive attention to your expected future performance in the relevant industry of the UK. Hence, pure excitement about you and your product isn’t enough!

Letter of Recommendation No. 3

A very important point: letters of recommendation from individuals within service-based organisations (i.e. consultants, agencies, outsourcers, service/process delivery) are generally not considered appropriate. However, work “generally” means that sometimes, in exceptional cases, you may apply such letter. How to understand will it be good or not? Well, a difficult question. But as I understand – global consultants (for example, the Big Four) are respected companies. Or any similar companies of the same scale and reputation. However, surely, you cannot attach all three letters of recommendation from such companies, even famous and well-reputed.

Your CV/resume

Do you have extra space? Write about your hobby in the case of the relation between your area of professional interest and what you are doing in spare time. I have already mentioned volunteer work at charity organisation but you can think about one more example. I work on agriculture tech startup Petiole and in my spare time, I do gardening and growing plants. Do you feel the link :)?

Cover Letter

On page 16 of Tech Nation Guidelines, there is a very important thing, that has never been before. Applicants are allowed to apply Cover Letter as a part of documents for Talent Visa. Isn’t this great :)? In other words, you are allowed to write on A4 paper explanations that will support your visa application. It may be either your point of view on some documents, or link between them, or note about people who signed letters of support.

Letter from the Digital Accelerator

I believe you will not be involved in the process of drafting this letter since the accelerators take responsibility for the content and delivering the correct document. But still – to dismiss any of possible errors, this letter must include:

  • your name, the title of your project and its brief description;
  • the title of the program, where you have been accepted, its dates, duration and location;
  • amount of money you get, details about your involvement (full-time or part-time)
  • any other useful information about your time as a resident of the accelerator.

Certificate of Company Registration

Simple and good clue of your work in digital technologies. But the applicant’s name must be on it. Please, attach all pages to the documents for Talent Visa. Hence the Endorsement Panel may see the whole picture, including SIC code of your company.

Letter of Support from Investor / Mentor

Straightforward for understanding and (hopefully) easy to get. If an investor or mentor have not provided a letter of recommendation – ask this person to get this letter.

Letter of Support from Partner Company

On the stage when you are at the starting point of your business, partnerships play an extremely important role in your life. Hence, if you have a trusted partner who has already signed a couple of partnership agreements with you and is enjoying your product (or, at least, its idea or MVP) – ask about one more favour on A4 paper 😉

Extract from a pending patent application

Sometimes it takes years to get a patent application approved. Hence, you are allowed to put all the details of your pending patent into one-two pages and apply it with other documents for Talent Visa.

Proof of the status of an invited speaker to an international conference

Write to the organisers with a direct request about proof of your participation at the international conference as a speaker.

Extract from the documentation about sold business in the past

Ideally, it has to be something official and trusted. But even if you do not have such documents, you may generate it by yourself, using extracts of information from different resources.

By the way, if you have had any media coverage of your successful exit, attach them too.

Extract of investment agreement into current company

Please, use an example from the extract from the employment agreement since the main bullet points of these documents are similar.

Screenshot from a professional social media account

You will not impress anyone with a dozen of thousands of followers. But if your digital presence at Instagram, Facebook or Twitter is good and stable with hundred of thousands – this is a reason (1) to be proud of yourself, (2) to continue your hard work, (3) to add this fact to the documents for Talent Visa.

At this moment, I will tell you the truth – I planned also to write here a list of documents for Talent Visa in Digital Technologies (Science) as well. In other words, when people have completed a PhD in Computer Science and other related areas and want to stay in the United Kingdom. But since my blog post, today is extremely long, I will have a break and consider science applicants in a separate article. So 15 more documents are on the way to my next post :).
