Full Guide on Change in Global Talent Visa Criteria

Change in Global Talent Visa criteria is coming on December 1, 2020

On December 1, 2020, the huge change for Global Talent Visa criteria is coming. These changes will be applicable only for Tech Nation Visa. It won’t have any impact for any other fields in this Exceptional Talent Visa route. However, for people who apply to get endorsement from Tech Nation, this change means a lot.

The Reasons for Change in Global Talent Visa Criteria

As you know, I am not related to Tech Nation at all and write as an independent person. At the same time, I must say that the Tech Nation’s decision to improve the criteria for Global Talent Visa, is well-reasoned.

From my own perspective, as a person who proofread the documents of applicants for Tech Nation Visa, I have what to say. Not all of the applications are strong enough. Yes, I do my best to help people to make their docs as good as possible. But if a person doesn’t have what to show, what does (s)he can show?

In the recent time, one of the very popular Key criteria was mentorship. In other words, more applicants tried to demonstrate that they were involved in mentorship activity. The evidences were not too bad, but still – the scale of the mentorship and the outcome was, in 90%, quite poor.

The same situation was related to one Qualifying criteria, namely Continuous Learning. People try to use this criteria and demonstrate that during the last couple of months they have finished two-three courses. But this is purely formal things. If you have recently graduated from the course, you physically can’t implement your knowledge on practise and build products… However, as we know, Tech Nation choses only product-minded leaders.

Hence, there was some practical collision in terms of the criteria to endorse Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise. From December 1, 2020, this practice will be changed. Let’s look closer on the change and how we can gain benefits out of the new criteria.

Official change in Global Talent Visa criteria

First of all, the news about the change in Global Talent Visa criteria is published on the official website of Tech Nation:

The main change for Tech Nation applications is the Eligibility Criteria

Tech Nation

There is quite detailed explanations about the main change. For example, most important aspects concerning date of submission include:

  • If you apply for Global Talent Visa in Digital Technology and submit your application on or before 30th November 2020, then you shouldn’t worry about the change in Global Talent Visa criteria at all. This change will not create any negative outcome for you. This means your application will be assessed according to the current guidance, with Mentorship and Continuous Learning criteria.
  • If you will apply on or after 1st December 2020, this means your Mentorship experience or continuous learning won’t give you any points at all. You won’t have these aspects included in your Global Talent Visa application. Tech Nation will apply new guidance to assess your documents.
Due to change in Global Talent Visa Criteria Mentorship is not a factor to include in Tech Nation Visa application

As a result of these changes, our life is currently divided on two periods – before and after. You must consider your own application in terms of this timeline.

Tech Nation and Application Submission Date

Indeed, the key factor for applying old rules or new criteria is based on the date, when you will submit your Global Talent Visa application.

At the same time, this date isn’t something, which can be manually changed. However, you must keep in mind these two things:

  1. Understanding your application submission date is not a complicated thing. This means that he official ‘Application for Endorsement’ on the Gov.uk website is your date. Tech Nation gets notification by the Home Office about the application submission date. Hence, if you’ll submit the Tech Nation application form later, this fact does not affect the official submission date. For example, when you submit your application to Home Office on November 30, 2020 but submit the form for Tech Nation on December 1, 2020, then your submission will still be considered under the old rules.
  2. Finally, the date of submission and assessment cannot be changed. There is no reason to ask Tech Nation to re-schedule it, because, as we know, Tech Nation is independent from Home Office.

That’s why I recommend you to act quickly and responsibly if you are ready to apply for Tech Nation Visa now. Because you’ll get a couple of extra days in

No Key and Qualifying Criteria now

Starting from December 1, 2020, we won’t use the Key and Qualifying criteria. In fact, they will exist. But we simply won’t call them with these words anymore. At the same time, the nature of eligibility criteria is now simpler.

The terms ‘Key’ and ‘Qualifying’ will no longer apply. Instead, a simpler set of mandatory and optional criteria will be introduced.

Tech Nation

In other words, the key criteria now is mandatory but the qualifying criteria became optional.

However, what is even more important – the content of the criteria is the main change in Global Talent Visa criteria.

Mandatory Criterion in Global Talent Visa

If you apply before or on November 30, then your Global Talent Visa application must have evidence about at least one of the two key criteria. In brief, they are related to (a) recognition in digital technology sector or (b) mentorship experience.

From the 1st December, we will have the only mandatory criterion instead of the two criteria above. As of now, we will pay attention only to recognition of the person as an expert in digital technology, which was previously one of the Qualifying Criteria.

Optional Criteria in Global Talent Visa

Similar change in Global Talent Visa criteria will happen with Qualifying criteria. Before or on November 30, you need to meet two of four criterion. In particular, you must have choose two of the following:

  1. have huge experience in digital technology (or demonstrate ability to have it in the future if you apply for Exceptional Promise), in ideal – with product-led businesses;
  2. must have recognition in the digital industry or be perspective leader in it;
  3. demonstrate continuous learning;
  4. show academic contributions.

Starting from December 1, 2020, you still need to have two of four optional criteria. Yes, qualifying criteria have now the title “optional”. However, what is important – continuous learning is not on the list anymore. And we have an official comment about this:

Please note, whilst the primary change is the reordering of the current criteria, the current Qualifying Criteria regarding Continuous Learning is being removed.

Tech Nation

But there is a question. One of the existing options will disappear, at the same time, we’ll still have four optional criteria to choose. What’s the trick?

In fact, there is a re-order of criteria. One criterion, which was Key criterion, moved to Optional criteria. As a result, in December we’ll still have four optional criteria to choose.

To illustrate the changes, if we count the total number of criteria now: 2 Key Criteria and 4 Qualifying criteria, which is 6 eligibility criteria for Global Talent Visa.

In December we will have 1 mandatory criterion and 4 optional criteria, which in total is 5 eligibility criteria.

Hence, you can see that the changes are not only in quality but in the quantity of the requirements as well.

Change in Global Talent Visa Criteria for Exceptional Talent

Starting from December 1, 2020 you need to follow the next eligibility scheme for Exceptional Talent.

Exceptional Talent

(leader in relevant field)

Mandatory CriterionOptional Criteria
Show that they have been recognised as a leading talent in the digital technology sector1. Have a proven track record for innovation as a founder or senior executive of a product-led digital technology company or as an employee working on a new digital field or concept; or
2. Proof of recognition for work beyond the applicant’s occupation that contributes to the advancement of the field; or
3. Have made significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the field as a founder, senior executive or employee of a product-led digital technology company; or
4. Have demonstrated exceptional ability in the field by academic contributions, through research published or endorsed by an expert.
For Exceptional Talent you must provide evidence for Mandatory Criterion and choose two from the Optional Criteria to prove them as well in your supporting documents

With this in mind, we can understand that Tech Nation tries to improve the quality of application and the depth of expertise, offered by the applicants. For example, until December 1, 2020, the person may have not extremely strong recognition in the industry by the international companies and press but get endorsement because of mentorship activity and continuous learning as well as contribution to product in digital technologies.

Because of the change in Global Talent Visa criteria, now the preference is provided to experts with strong reputation as leaders in their niche.

As we can see, to be a recognised leader is a must-have option. Without this you cannot think about Tech Nation Visa at all.

Change in Global Talent Visa Criteria for Exceptional Promise

Exceptional Promise

(potential leader in relevant field)

Mandatory CriterionOptional Criteria

As with the Exceptional Talent, the route for Exceptional Promise has the only must-have: to show the ability to be a recognised leader.
